If you want to experience the Sahara the way nomads have travelled it for generations, our Erg Chigaga wilderness trek offers a truly immersive adventure on foot.

Depending on your route, you can begin your journey from MHamid, Foum Zguid, or Zagora. From there, the caravan heads deep into the desert, with the camels carrying your luggage, food, water, and camping equipment while you walk freely across the changing landscapes.

This is a genuine desert walking experience — not a camel ride with a few short walks. You’ll cross rocky plains, pass acacia trees and dry riverbeds, explore smaller dune fields, and gradually enter the immense golden landscape of Erg Chigaga.

Trekking Logistics and Duration

  • Duration Options: Available from 3 to 10 days (fully customizable to your fitness level).
  • Starting Points: Can depart directly from our desert bases in M’hamid El Ghizlane, Foum Zguid or Zagora.
  • Daily Pace: Approximately 4 to 5 hours of walking per day, divided into a morning session and a late afternoon session to avoid the midday heat.

What to Expect on Your Trekking Safari

  • The morning: The day begins with the first light over the desert and the smell of fresh nomadic coffee. After breakfast, the camels are loaded and we set off on foot. The landscape slowly changes around you as the caravan moves deeper into the wilderness.
  • The midday pause: When the sun becomes stronger, we stop in a sheltered place, often beneath an acacia or tamarisk tree. It’s time to rest, have lunch, take a nap, or simply enjoy the silence before continuing later in the afternoon.
  • Into the dunes: As you approach Erg Chigaga, the landscape gradually changes. The hard desert floor gives way to soft sand and rolling dunes. Climbing the great dunes on foot can be demanding, but reaching the top and looking across the endless Sahara is an experience you won’t forget.
  • Evenings around the fire: Every night brings a new camp. While the guides prepare dinner, there is time to gather around the fire, talk about the day’s journey, watch traditional bread being prepared, and enjoy the incredible silence of the desert. Then, when the fire dies down, you can fall asleep beneath one of the clearest night skies you will ever see.

Caravan Comfort and Wild Camping

  • Our camel caravan travels with the group, carrying the tents, mattresses, sleeping bags, food, water, and cooking equipment.
  • The camp is packed up each morning and rebuilt somewhere new each evening.
  • A local cook travels with the caravan and prepares fresh Moroccan meals throughout the trek, giving you the chance to enjoy simple, generous food even in the middle of the desert.
