What to Expect on the Erg Zahar Trek
- Deep Into the Draa Riverbed: Leave the palm groves of M’hamid behind. Your route follows the ancient, dry bed of the Draa River, crossing vast tamarisks groves and clay plates before hitting the true sand sea.
- Conquering the Screaming Crests: Arriving at Erg Zahar on foot is unforgettable. The dunes rise sharply like golden mountains. Climbing to the top rewards you with a 360-degree view of an ocean of sand stretching all the way toward the Algerian border.
- The Legend of the Roaring Sand: If you are lucky and the wind blows correctly, your local guides will show you how the dunes “scream” or “sing.” This natural acoustic phenomenon occurs when sand grains slide down the steep dune slopes.
- Expedition Nights: Sleep in a wild mobile bivouac at the base of the dunes. Enjoy a warm bowl of traditional Moroccan soup, fresh nomad sandbread baked right under the embers, and a night of total silence under the Milky Way.
